The Exact Second a Scene Should Cut to Black
Colette explains why the best exit from a romantic scene is always a heartbeat earlier than you think.

Every young editor believes the scene ends when the conversation does. Every old editor knows the scene ends when the audience stops being able to bear it. There is a window, usually about a second and a half wide, where a hand has just reached the doorknob, or a name has just been said, and the whole room is leaning forward. Cut there. Cut a breath later and the tension leaks out like air from a punctured balloon.
I keep a private rule I call the unfinished sentence test. If a character is mid-thought when the screen goes dark, the viewer finishes the line themselves, and what they finish is always better than anything a writer could have supplied. In a short romance drama, where you have minutes instead of hours, that borrowed imagination is free labor, and I accept it gratefully.

The black itself matters too. A hard cut to black is a slammed piano lid. A slow fade is a sigh. A cut to black on a sound, a laugh, a zipper, a lock turning, is a wink, and winks are my specialty. The sound tells you something happened, the dark refuses to tell you what, and your pulse does the rest of the work.
Watch for the scenes that overstay. You know them: the couple finishes the kiss, then there is a lingering shot of the ceiling, then a line about how they feel, then a second line confirming the first. Each added beat is a small apology for the scene's confidence. Trust the moment. Leave before the party gets explained.
Try this the next time you binge something on TheFriend, whether it is One Look Changed Everything or any of the other short dramas waiting there. Pause in your head one beat before the cut and ask whether the scene would be stronger if it ended right now. Nine times out of ten the answer is yes, and the tenth time is a lesson in mercy.
